The Dead Christ Between the Virgin and Mary Magdalene, The painting shows Christ after his death on the cross held by his mother Mary and follower Mary Magdalene. Christ is not centered but off to the viewer's left. Though he has just endured the Passion, he is rendered white, palid, and almost untouched by wounds and blood--save for his brow and the right side of his chest. Mary the Mother of Christ wears a red garment, white veil, and purple cloak over top. Mary Magdalene attempts to clutch at Christ's right outer thigh, and holds her chest with her left hand. Behind the figures is a nondescript landscape with trees and mountains in the far distance, but no markers of the narrative scene or events. The Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Elizabeth, The painting shows the Madonna and Child with Mary's cousin Saint Elizabeth and her son Saint John the Baptist. Mary the Mother of Christ and the child gaze at one another as the nude child sits close to her face; she supports him with her right arm and holds a book in her hand.. This is traditionally associated with Saint John the Baptist, who is held against Mary's waist with her left hand. This child looks up at Jesus and offers him berries with his right hand from a bowl in his left. The artist shows a trace of the camel skin coat that the saint wears as an adult. Behind Mary's left shoulder Saint Elizabeth loos down at her son John. She wears a white veil, while Mary's is thin and translucent. Mary's garment is also bright with a lighter shoulder cloth and a blue cloak. The background shows a non distinct landscape setting. Portrait of a Young Man, The portrait shows a half-length sitter from the waist up. He stands tall with his chest pointed slightly to the viewer's left, but his face turned forward. He wears a black coat with a white shirt frilled at his neck and showing at his wrists. His coat and his hat seem to have additional pleats and gold bits, perhaps to subtly show his wealth. His left hand sits on his hip prominently displaying the ring on his pinky finger, this may be a signet ring or seal, showing his status or his membership within a high society. The other hand, his right, holds a place in a book. He is shown in an interior space, with a table under the book on his right, and a chair arm by his left side. They show elaborate carvings on the wood, but otherwise, the scene focuses solely on the sitter. This record and SC.MSS.088.FLOR.10709 are from different sources, but are identical images. Portrait of Ugolino Martelli, The portrait shows a half-length sitter from the waist up. He sits on the edge of a table with his body turned toward the viewer's right and his head pointed the other direction, off to the viewer's left. His gaze seems fixed on something other than the objects in his hand or his surroundings. He wears a black hat and black cloak and trousers, with only a trace of a white collar showing underneath. His clothes may show his wealth, but his knowledge and character may be signified by the objects he holds and sits near. His hands hold books; one in his left by Pietro Bembo, and the one in his right, Homer's Iliad, is open with his finger pointing to a particular page. The book is under a light pink table with a green table cloth atop. The scene looks to be painted in an exterior setting on the street or in a courtyard. Behind the sitter is a statue of the Biblical figure David standing with his left leg at the head of the defeated giant Goliath (the story comes from the Book of 1 Samuel 17. Portrait of Lucrezia Panciatichi, The half-length portraits shows the seated woman in a chair from the waist up. The chair and her body are pointed slightly to the viewer's left, but her face is shown at a frontal view. She looks directly at the viewer. Her hair is tied up in a bun and held by a jeweled headband, she also wears a pearl necklace with a gold piece at her throat, and a ring on her left ring finger, which is pointed out at the audience. Her dress is an expensive material, most likely silk due to the way it is rendered to fold and shimmer. She wears a gold collar and her sleeves are a darker brown color. Her left hand holds to the arm of the chair she sits in, while her right hand holds open a book. The dark background gives no indication of where she is seated, although there seems to be a light source coming from the viewer's left, which casts shadow on the far right side of her face. The work is meant to display the sitter and perhaps her wealth, but it looks almost as if she has looked up from reading the book in her hand, which proves the intelligence reaped from her good breeding, as well. The image is identical to record SC.MSS.088.FLOR.10714 although they come from different sources. This is a basic record created to enable public access to scanned images. Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist (Madonna and Child with Infant Saint John the Baptist), The painting shows the Madonna and Child the Infant Saint John the Baptist holding the sleeping babe and Saint Joseph, the father of Christ, watching at Mary's left side. Mary the Mother of Christ looks down at the two boys, rather than at the viewer. She wears a bright red garment with a V-shaped collar and translucent cover over her chest, and a broche in the middle between her breasts; she ties a light blue belt at her waist and has a dark blue garment over her legs. Joseph is at her left side and looks down at the children, as well; his garment is a soft purple and is only visible over his shoulder and left arm. Baby Jesus reclines on a pillow and bag, sleeping under a garment or sheet. John puts his head close to his cousin's face, and holds his right hand on the baby's chest. A scroll at the foot of the scene begins to unravel and read the word "Saint." Also, there is a rock at the baby's feet. Behind the family in the distance is a castle turret with a flag and other contemporary sixteenth century buildings on a rocky landscape. The image is meant to be a devotional image to the Holy Family rather than a narrative scene from the lives of Christ or Mary.
