Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist (Madonna and Child with Infant Saint John the Baptist), This image shows a detail of the child Saint John the Baptist and the infant Christ following painting. It gives a detailed view of their hair, facial features, and intimate positioning. The painting shows the Madonna and Child the Infant Saint John the Baptist holding the sleeping babe and Saint Joseph, the father of Christ, watching at Mary's left side. Mary the Mother of Christ looks down at the two boys, rather than at the viewer. She wears a bright red garment with a V-shaped collar and translucent cover over her chest, and a broche in the middle between her breasts; she ties a light blue belt at her waist and has a dark blue garment over her legs. Joseph is at her left side and looks down at the children, as well; his garment is a soft purple and is only visible over his shoulder and left arm. Baby Jesus reclines on a pillow and bag, sleeping under a garment or sheet. John puts his head close to his cousin's face, and holds his right hand on the baby's chest. A scroll at the foot of the scene begins to unravel and read the word "Saint." Also, there is a rock at the baby's feet. Behind the family in the distance is a castle turret with a flag and other contemporary sixteenth century buildings on a rocky landscape. The image is meant to be a devotional image to the Holy Family rather than a narrative scene from the lives of Christ or Mary. This is a basic record created to enable public access to scanned images. Full research on this image is pending., c.1540-45
