Portrait of a Young Man with a Lute, The portrait shows the seated young man from the knees up, with his body facing to his right side but his head pointed off to his left side. He wears a black hat and black frock and tights, with a white collar showing at his neck. He rests his left hand on his thigh and rests his right arm against a table and holds a lute in his hand. On the table over a green table cloth, a small-scale statue shows the Classic Venus of Urbino, a motif in which the half-clothed or nude goddess is shown caught in the act of bathing. The sitter is in an interior space, with a chesterfield behind him, a door in the back, and the light coming from the viewer's left side, casting a shadow to the right side.
