The H. Fort Flowers Collection, 1915-1970, consists of Differential Steel Car Company advertisements and materials marking Vanderbilt's recognition of H. Fort Flowers, 1887-1975.

Abstract

The Landon Cabell Garland Papers (1830-1958) includes correspondence, diaries, speeches, sermons, a report to the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust, and personal and biographical materials. These are personal papers of Chancellor Garland and are not to be confused with his university papers. This collection is a small snapshot of Chancellor Garland's personal life, with the family correspondence providing the main interest.

This collection contains one scrapbook of photographs detailing the construction of buildings for the Vanderbilt hospital and Medical School in 1936-1938.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is composed of one box with thirteen folders and one book within. Researchers will find materials from Herefords’ education, including her doctoral thesis, as well as materials from her tenure at Vanderbilt University. Furthermore, there is a large compilation of photographs of both her and her peers archived in the collection. Finally, there is correspondence to Hereford and condolences following her death.

The Robert A. McGaw Papers are comprised of four series; Vanderbilt University, Designs, Writings and WWII. The papers follow closely McGaw’s career and are important to anyone interested in the history of the university. Of special note is the Design Series where McGaw assisted in re-designing the symbols of the university in the 1970s.

This collection contains 2 volumes of board minutes from the Nashville School of Social Work, which operated in partnership with Vanderbilt University, Peabody College, and Scarritt Bennett College until 1951 when it became part of the University of Tennessee system. Vanderbilt granted degrees for the institution from 1944-1951.

Scope and Content Note This collection consists of Dean J. Robert Nelson’s materials relating to the events at Vanderbilt University that were known as “the Lawson affair.” In 1960, a graduate student in the Divinity School was dismissed from the University, despite the Dean’s objections, for his participation in local lunch-counter sit-ins.
