Scope and Content Note

This collection is composed of one box with thirteen folders and one book within. Researchers will find materials from Herefords’ education, including her doctoral thesis, as well as materials from her tenure at Vanderbilt University. Furthermore, there is a large compilation of photographs of both her and her peers archived in the collection. Finally, there is correspondence to Hereford and condolences following her death.

Biographical Note

Julia Hereford (1912-1985) received her undergraduate degree from Cumberland University in 1933 and her graduate degree from Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing in 1936. In 1938 Hereford became an instructor at the School of Nursing, and after completing a Master of Arts. in teaching at the Columbia University, she became an Assistant Professor in 1943. Hereford was a member of the National League of Nursing Education’s staff in 1945. In 1947 she achieved the rank of Associate Professor. She was finally promoted to both a full Professor and the Dean of Vanderbilt’s School of Nursing (a title she held from 1949 to 1965).

From 1958 to 1959 and 1965 to 1968 Hereford took a leave of absence to finish her PhD at the University of Chicago. After completing her doctorate in 1972, Hereford became Vanderbilt’s first director of academic advising until she officially retired in 1977. However, she continued to participate as a Professor Emeritus until the early 1980s.

Hereford passed away in 1985. The Julia Hereford Society was established to both honor her, and support the School of Nursing.
