Biographical / Historical
Born in Jackson, Tennessee, Jacque Voegeli grew up in Fulton, Kentucky, and graduated from Murray State College. After graduation, he was a field artillery officer on active duty in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958 and in the Army Reserve from 1959 to 1963, when he was discharged with the rank of captain. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Voegeli taught history at Tulane from 1963 to 1967, when he joined the history faculty at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Most of his tenure at Vanderbilt was spent in academic administration. He chaired the Department of History from 1973-1975, was Dean of the College of Arts and Science from 1976-1992, and was Acting Dean of the same school from 1996-1997. He retired from Vanderbilt in 1998. He died on March 7, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee.
