Biographical / Historical
James Herbert Gilmore, Jr. (1925-1995) was born to Mabel Doyal and James Herbert Gilmore, Sr. on January 7, 1925. He received his BA from Carson-Newman College in 1945, his MA from George Peabody College in 1949, his BD from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1950, and his ThM and ThD from Yale University (1951, 1959). He served as a pastor in Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Alabama, Washington, D.C., and as a visiting professor at Missouri Valley College, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Carver School of Missions and Social Work, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Gilmore was a member of the Academy of Parish Clergy, Society of Biblical Literature, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He published The Church and the Nation (1979), The Cross of Love (1979), Devotions for the Home (1971), They Chose to Live: The Racial Agony of an American Church (1972), and When Love Prevails: A Pastor Speaks to a Church in Crisis (1971). Gilmore died in Rutledge, Tennessee, on March 23, 1995.
