This collection contains the papers of William Campbell Binkley, chair of the Department of History at Vanderbilt University from 1930-1953. Binkley's research interests involved the history of the American West, especially the early history of Texas.

Biographical Note - William Campbell Binkley
William Campbell Binkley was born on April 30, 1889 in Newbern, Tennessee. He received his B.A. (1917), M.A. (1918), and PhD (1920). From the University of California. He taught at Colorado College beginning in 1921. From 1930-1953 he was professor and chair of the Department of History at Vanderbilt University. He then served as professor of history at Tulane University from 1953-1963.
At various times, Binkley edited the Mississippi Valley Historical Review, the Tennessee Historical Quarterly, and the Journal of Southern History. He was one of the founders of the Southern Historical Association.
Binkley died on August 19, 1970 and was buried in New Orleans.
Binkley authored three major books during his life:
-The Expansionist Movement in Texas, 1836–1850 (1925)
-Official Correspondence of the Texas Revolution, 1835–1836 (1935)
-The Texas Revolution (1952)
