Peabody Dames Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a miscellany of records (historical, financial, membership, press, and other) from this social club connected to George Peabody College for Teachers.
The collection is .84 linear feet and covers the years 1917 until 1974. In addition there is a scrapbook containing photographs, reports, yearbooks, and programs and which includes materials from the years 1953-1957.

The physical materials from this collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Vanderbilt’s Special Collections and University Archives. Historical Note
The Peabody Dames was first organized in 1915 with its object being “the promotion of sociability among its members and the discussion of current interests, and such other forms of self-improvement as shall be designated from time to time.”
The first minutes from the meetings of the Peabody Dames date from 1917 and are entered in a notebook that also contains some reports of the Treasurer and rolls of membership.
The constitution and articles of the club state that “the annual meeting shall be held the first Friday in November of each year for election of officers and the receiving of annual reports.” The Peabody Dames membership included students and wives of students, faculty, and wives of faculty, administrative staff, and mothers of students, and any woman officially connected to Peabody. The Peabody Dames organization closed its doors in the 1970’s before the merger of George Peabody College with Vanderbilt University.
