Abstract

The John B. Lomax Collection contains 54 photographs documenting the African-American soldiers of the 3067 Quartermaster Salvage Collecting Company in training in Wyoming during WWII, with almost all of the photographs annotated with humorous remarks and identifications of the images. There is also a photostatic copy of discharge papers.

This collection consists primarily of 197 handwritten letters John Manchester wrote to his family in Nashville, Tennessee during his military service. The collection also includes military orders, telegrams, other original artifacts, and one copy of the book School Boy to Helldiver.

The Robert A. McGaw Papers are comprised of four series; Vanderbilt University, Designs, Writings and WWII. The papers follow closely McGaw’s career and are important to anyone interested in the history of the university. Of special note is the Design Series where McGaw assisted in re-designing the symbols of the university in the 1970s.

There are seven items published during the First World War with the bulk of the collection containing newspapers and magazines from World War II published in the United States by servicemen stationed at bases across the country.

This collection contains personal letter written by friends and family of Philipp Rezek, who were Jewish refugees. The collection covers Austria’s takeover by the Germans in 1938, the family’s departure, internment camps, arrival to the United States, and medical school. A few of the letters are written from right to left to pass German censors. The majority of this collection is in German.

This .21 linear feet collection contains 35 pieces of correspondence, nine photographs, and one theatrical program. Subjects in the correspondence cover the theatre, television, World War II, V-E Day, general notes, telegrams, and thank you notes.
