Biographical / Historical
Bill Kovach was born in 1932 in East Tennessee. He attended East Tennessee State University and served in the U.S. Navy for four years. From 1960-1967 he worked for the Nashville Tennessean covering the civil rights movement, politics, and Appalachian poverty. In 1968 he went to work for the New York Times and spent 18 years there, eventually serving as its Washington bureau chief. Kovach was hired as the editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1986, with the staff winning two Pulitzer Prizes during his tenure there. In 1989, Kovach became the curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. Kovach became the founding chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists in 1997. In 2001, he co-authored the book “The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect” with Tom Rosenstiel. Kovach became a faculty member at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 2006.
