Biographical / Historical
Keller Henderson Bumgardner Barron was born to Gertrude Louise Keller and George Walter Henderson in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 20, 1932. She attended Vanderbilt University, where she roomed in the Vaughn House, for the 1949-1950 academic year. She completed her studies at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and graduated in 1953. Barron joined the League of Women Voters (LWV) in the mid-1950s, served as the president of the Columbia, SC, LWV from 1963-1965, and served as the president of the South Carolina LWV from 1967-1971, during which time she oversaw the desegregation of the organization. Barron served on the national board of the LWV during much of the 1970s. In 1977, she became the first female chair of the South Carolina Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. She has continued to work for equality and women's rights in a number of capacities throughout her lifetime.
