Larry Romans Papers

The Larry Romans Papers consists of documents and artifacts collected by Larry Romans, a Vanderbilt librarian and LGBTQ rights activist in Nashville, primarily from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. The Larry Romans papers were originally divided between Vanderbilt Special Collections and University Archives and the Special Collections Division of the Nashville Public Library but have now been fully obtained by Vanderbilt University. There are nine series in this collection, arranged by subject matter and material type. Subseries were created when appropriate. Listed below are the series with further information.

Series I: Artifacts: This series contains physical artifacts collected by Larry Romans, such as pins, T-shirts, and other memorabilia. The artifacts are primarily related to politics or activism that Larry Romans was involved in. This series consists of three subseries:

Subseries—Clothing: Primarily t-shirts and a hat.

Subseries—Pins: Pin-back buttons and enamel pins mostly related to political or LGBTQ activism.

Subseries—Miscellaneous: All other artifacts can be found here (CURRENTLY MISSING)

Series II: Correspondence: This series consists of correspondence to and from Larry Romans from 1993 to 1996.

Series III: Ephemera: This series consists of possessions of Larry Romans not directly related to LGBTQ or political activism, such as postcards, pamphlets from theater programs, and personal items of interest.

Series IV: Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice (LGCJ): This series houses documents related to the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice, an LGBTQ rights organization from Nashville, Tennessee in the early 1990s. This series contains three subseries.

Subseries—Correspondence: Letters related to communication within and outside of the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice.

Subseries—Public Relations: Documents related to the public relations committee and their activities.

Subseries—Committees: Documents related to committees affiliated with the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice.

Series V: 1993 March on Washington: This series consists of materials related to the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation, which Larry Romans participated in. There are itineraries and periodicals. Photographs for the March can be found in Series VIII, and a T-shirt can be found in Series I.

Series VI: Periodicals: This series consists of newspaper articles, newspaper clippings, and magazines involving queer news on a variety of subjects. This series is organized by publication titles and subjects. This series contains one subseries.

Subseries—Newspaper Articles and Clippings: Various newspapers with material related to the LGCJ or LGBTQ topics.

Series VII: Peripheral Organizations and Materials: This series consists of materials related to peripheral organizations outside of the Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice (LGCJ) that Larry Romans may have been involved in.

Series VIII: Photographs: This series consists of photographs collected or taken by Larry Romans.

Series IX: Religion and Homosexuality: This series consists of documents discussing the relationship between religion and homosexuality collected by Larry Romans.
