Provincia de Matanzas Termino Municipal de Cardenas Manuscript

 Collection
Identifier: MSS.0850

  • Staff Only

Scope and Contents

A handwritten and highly detailed register of semi-emancipated slaves under the Cuban concept of the patronato, meaning, an intermediate status between slave and free. This concept denied the idea that interests of slave masters and former slaves were in conflict, and suggested that interests could be mediated and compromised to the benefit of both through a system of patrocinado. This register gives the names of over 1400 people who were provisionally released from slavery after Cuba began its gradual emancipation. Each listing provides the owner's name, the former slave's name and age, and details about them. The slaves of the Spanish colonies were among the last to be emancipated in 1886.
