Scope and Contents
The Alexander Sutherland Manuscript (1898) consists of six handwritten lectures titled “The Kingdom of God and Problems of Today” delivered before Vanderbilt University by preacher and author Alexander Sutherland (1833-1910). These lectures are part of the larger Cole lecture series.

This collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Special Collections in the Jean and Alexander Heard Library. Biographical / Historical
Alexander Sutherland (1833-1910), son of Mary Henderson and Nicholas Sutherland, was born on 13 September 1833 in Guelph Township, Canada. He received little educational advantages and learned the printing trade at age 13. Later he joined the Methodist Church and was ordained as a preacher in 1859. Sutherland was an early advocate of the Sunday School Movement to introduce children into the church. He launched the journal, Earnest Christianity in 1873. Sutherland was a loyal supporter of the church’s missionary efforts and advocated for the union of Methodist churches. Sutherland died in Toronto on 30 June 1910.
