Jannon's Lettres de Carthagene
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a manuscript letter copy book composed of retained copies of letters written from Cartagena, Colombia by Jannon, a French merchant, describing revolutionary-era South America. The letters reflect political intensity between supporters of the liberation movement led by Simon Bolivar and those of Vice President Francisco José de Paula Santander y Omaña over Bolivar's attempt to reform the 1821 constitution. Most letters signed "Signe de Jannon."
Entries are dated: January 13, 1828; February 6, 1828; March 7, 1828; March 10, 1828; April 6, 1828; and June 10, 1828. Appears to have had pages cut and removed from back of book.
Letters written in French on handmade paper with exposed chainlinks, quarto size. Bound in a green and yellow marbled paper wrapper.

The physical materials from this collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Vanderbilt’s Special Collections and University Archives.
