Biographical / Historical
Martha Jane Livesay Whiteside (1922-2011), daughter of Margaret Bird and Col. H.R. Livesay M.D., was born in 1922 in San Antonio, Texas. She earned a B.A. from Barnard College and then served for two years in the US Office of Naval Cryptography during WW II, reaching the rank of Lieutenant JG. Whiteside earned an MA in Library Science from the University of Chicago and moved to Lexington in 1951, where she worked at the University of Kentucky Library. Whiteside twice served as president of the Kentucky League of Women Voters and was named to state commissions by various governors. She was a life-long amateur musician and supporter of the arts. Whiteside died in Lexington, Kentucky on 6 December 2011.
