Biographical / Historical
Ernest Franklin “Frank” Sutherland, Jr. (1945 - ) was born in 1945 in Smyrna, Tennessee. He started writing for The Tennessean while a student at Vanderbilt University. In 1973, he went undercover at Nashville’s Central State Hospital for the Insane and wrote a series of ground-breaking pieces in which he exposed mistreatment and corruption at the facility. Between 1977 and 1978, Sutherland completed a prestigious Neiman Fellowship in journalism at Harvard University. He then served in editorial positions at various newspapers across the South before returning to The Tennessean in 1989 as editor. During his tenure, he oversaw the acquisition of The Tennessean by Gannett Media, America’s largest newspaper publisher. Sutherland retired in 2004.
