SBL

Among the paper of Kendrick Grabel in the Vanderbilt Special Collection, there are no articles dealing with the SBL.

During the year 1964, when he was Secretary of the Society, and infact, from 1963 until his death in 1965, there are only two pieces of outgoing (and no incoming) correspondence which mention the Society: Letter, 12 November 1964--to Dean VanBogaard Dunn of the Methodist Theological Seminary in Ohio. Grabel mentions that the office of Secretary of the SBL has put constraints on his time. Letter, 5 December 1964--to Dean Roger Hazelton of Oberlin. Grabel mentions that he is responsible for the details of the lOOth National Meeting of the SBL but does not elaborate.

After going through all his correspondence from the 1920's on, only two letters can be found which mention the SBL: Letter, 5 October 1934--incoming from Benjamin W. Robinson of Chicago Theological Seminary in which he urges Grabel (apparently not yet a member of SBL) to join the Society and offers him sponsorship. He encourages Grobel to write Secretary Harvey Tryon at Union. The membership fee was 13.00 per year at that time. Letter, 31 January 1946 (handwritten)--incoming from Henry Cadbury concerning the mail situation and paper stocks in light of war restrictions. (Mentions also Bultmann's University situation.)

Among Grabel's files there can be found many pieces of material (all pre-1964)concerning the SBL. These consist mostly of printed programs of yearly national and regional meetings: Box 8 Diamond (50th) Jubilee Address by Henry Cadbury, 29 December at Union, consists of a short history of the SBL. (Fuller information is to be found in JBL, L(l93l)i-lxxx, '~ransactions and Memorabilia of the Fiftieth Annual Meeting." Report of the Commission on the Revsion of the Constitution, A proposed Constitution and By-Laws. At the top, in Grobel's hand is written, "Adopted Dec. '49." Program of the 85th Annual Meeting, 28-30 December 1949 at Hebrew Union in Cincinnati Program of the Second Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Section of the National Association of Biblical Instructors (NABI) and the Third Annual Meeting of the Southern Section of the SBLE, 27-28 March 1950. First Notice of the 1950 Meeting (from R. Clark) to be held at Vanderbilt-Scarritt in Nashville. Program of the 8Gth Annual Meeting, 27-28 December 1950 at Union in NY First Notice of the 1952 Annual Meeting (from L.P. Smith) Program of the 6th Annual Meeting of NABI and the 7th Annual Meeting Southern Section SBL, 29-20 March 1954 at Wofford College, Spartanburg, SC
