Biographical / Historical
The Nashville University Women’s Council was an organization that focused on issues that affect women in colleges and universities. Its active years were from 1973 to 1979. Their interest in women’s studies led to the formation of a woman’s studies consortium. They travelled to different campuses in the Nashville and greater Tennessee area to present workshops and vital information for women pursuing a higher education.
The council’s main connection is to the women’s studies department of Scarritt College and George Peabody College. The taskforce was directed by Barbara S. Wallston of Peabody College. Goals of the group were to provide visibility for women and women’s studies in Nashville. This was an organization that taught women how to be leaders in their field of study and encouraged women to pursue leadership roles; their influence gave a lasting presence of women’s education in various academic institutions.
