Biographical / Historical
Reynold E. Carlson was born on September 7, 1912, in Chicago, Illinois. He received his BA from Northwestern University and his PhD from Harvard University. He went on to teach economics at Johns Hopkins University, Grinnell College, Franklin Pierce College, and Vanderbilt University, where he served as director of the Brazilian Institute from 1949 to 1953. From 1959 to 1975, Carlson worked at the Ford Foundation, where he served as a associate director of the foundation’s Latin American program and as a representative in Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. In 1966, Carlson served as the United States Ambassador to Colombia. Carlson died on October 27, 1993, in Nashville and is buried in Chicago.
