The archangel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary to tell her of her immaculate conception of the Christ child. This scene is traditionally painted with lilies, the symbol of Mary’s purity; here, they are between the winged angel Gabriel on the left, and the Virgin Mary on the right. Mary wears a crown to allude to her future role as the queen of heaven. The interior is a contemporary fifteenth-century design, with geometric floors and arched doorways upheld by columns with gilded capitals. Through the interior doorway in the distance there is a landscape with a sun shining high in the sky; in this bright spot there is a faint outline of the figure of a man, either God the Father or Christ.
