The Phil Schaap Jazz Collection documents the professional activities and research of jazz historian, broadcaster, producer, educator, and writer Phil Schaap. The collection primarily consists of materials relating to Schaap’s research, writing, broadcasting, recording projects, teaching, consulting, and involvement with jazz organizations and events. Significant portions of the collection document his extensive research on Charlie Parker, including recordings, discographies, biographical research, correspondence, interviews, photographs, concert programs, and materials related to the production of recordings and publications. The collection also contains research files on numerous jazz musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bix Beiderbecke, Roy Eldridge, and others. Research materials include discographies and solographies, audio source and tape identification reports, biographical materials, liner notes, writings, and working notes. Materials documenting Schaap’s broadcasting career include records relating to WKCR and other radio and television projects, including program guides, scripts, correspondence, research materials, and documentation of festivals, birthday and memorial broadcasts. The collection also documents Schaap’s work with Jazz at Lincoln Center through program and concert materials, research projects, radio programs, scripts, correspondence, publicity, and business records. The collection further includes teaching materials from Schaap’s work at Princeton University, Columbia University, Rutgers University, the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Hunter College, and other institutions. Consulting files document Schaap’s work researching recordings, collections, photographs, and other jazz-related materials. The collection also contains materials relating to Schaap’s work aswith The Countsmen and West End Cafe.
