Scope and Contents

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.FLEM.1249; Public Notes: The authority of this piece has been much debated; however, recent provenance research conducted by the Wadsworth Atheneum seems to verify that the work was the hand of Battista Dossi. This piece was once owned by Oscar Bondy of Vienna until it was confiscated by the Nazis in 1938 during the occupation of Austria. The painting was later transferred to the Munich Checkpoint from the collection intended for Hitler's Fuhrermuzeum in Linz. Finally, the painting was returned to the Bondy family and was purchased by the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1949 at the Kende Galleries in New York.
