Coronation of the Virgin, In this image is the scene of the Coronation of the Virgin. In the central upper area of the painting, Christ crowns Mary the queen of Heaven, while the dove of the Holy Spirit and God the Father watch from between Christ and Mary. They are all enthroned, and the throne is held up by a crowd of putti/holy innocents who also hold the instruments of Christ's passion. At the base of the throne, on a cusped plinth in the foreground, the four evangelists sit with books (Luke also has a small painting) and their respective attribute (left to right) John-eagle, Mark-lion, Matthew-angel, Luke-ox). Also seated on the plinth are the four doctors of the Church. Behind them is a row of women saints on each side, and behind them are two rows of men saints on each side. Behind the rows of saints is an ethereal background of clouds., 1448

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.VENI.0025; Public Notes: This work by Giambono, is similar to another work of the same theme by Antonio Vivarini and Giovanni d'Alemagna, from S. Pantalon, Venice (1444). It was copied from the S. Pantalon version. This work by Giambono has also been photographed more recently, in which further, upper rows of angels are visible. It has been restored many times since this photo was taken by Alinari. Note: this photo is duplicated in box 189, record SC.MSS.088.VENI.0173.
