Apotheosis of the battle of Lepanto, Painting is two-fold. On the bottom, the scene depicts the Battle of Lepanto, a large naval endeavor, in which the Ottoman Empire battled and lost to the Catholic Maritime States in 1571. Above this is the second, heavenly in which the personification of Venice is being blessed by Virgin Mary and other saints, surrounded by angels. This second scene illustrates a belief that the victory was due to divine intervention., circa 1571
