Scope and Contents
Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.SCUL.0419; Public Notes: The Orti San Michaelis or Orsanmichele was built in the 14th century to replace Florence's crumbling market infrastructure, the building was to house a market and a meeting place for the various guilds, who were each given a niche outside the building. Giambologna produced the statue of Saint Luke under the commission of the Guild of Magistrates and Notaries. Today, Saint Mark is housed inside the church museum.
