Scope and Contents

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.SCUL.0355; Public Notes: The Orti San Michaelis or Orsanmichele was built in the 14th century to replace Florence's crumbling market infrastructure, the building was to house a market and a meeting place for the various guilds, who were each given a niche outside the building. Donatello produced the statue of Saint Mark under the commission of the linen drapers guild but the niche was likely completed by two stone carvers named Perfetto di Giovanni and Albizzo di Pietro. Today, Saint Mark is housed inside the church museum.
