Portrait of Don Manuel de Godoy, In 1808 a mob attacked the house of Manuel Godoy, where he was later arrested and his home looted. Among his personal possessions was this painting, the original done by Francisco Goya in 1806. The painting showed Manuel Godoy in his role as Protector of instruction standing before a crowd of students. In his left hand he holds a copy of the Generalissimo Extremadura (1767-1851), the treaty on Public Education by Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), who had inspired Godoy’s education reform and whose portrait is also found on the open page found in Godoy’s hand. Behind the group is the Military Institute Pestalozziano, erected in November 1806 in Madrid to train future officers of the Army school. In 1807 Agustin Esteve y Marques was commissioned to make a copy of this painting, in accordance with his role as "Court painter, portraitist of the Dukes of Osuna and copyist of Goya," In 1816 all copies of this painting were moved to the Academy of Fine Arts to store them, over time these images suffered significant damage and in 2013 a restoration project was enacted to restore the piece by Agustin Esteve y Marques. It is unclear which painting this represents and as such makes finding its location unclear. Though notes on the back of the image provide other information.
