Biography

Randall Stewart was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee, on July 25, 1896. His family moved to Nashville two years later, and he enrolled at Vanderbilt after he graduated from high school. He graduated from Vanderbilt in 1917 and taught English at the University of Oklahoma from 1917 to 1920. He married Cleone Odell in 1920. He got his masters from Harvard in 1921 and his PhD from Yale in 1930. In the 1930s and 1940s, he taught at Yale, Vanderbilt, and Brown. From 1955-1963, he served as the chairman of the English department at Vanderbilt. Stewart died in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 17, 1964.
