Annunciation panel from the Triptych of the Annunciation, The central panel of the Triptych of the Annunciation shows the Annunciation scene. It is rendered within a contemporary fifteenth-century church, showing several rows of columns and a small window. In the above left, the bearded man represents God the Father, holding an orb in his left hand, with two angels behind him. He holds up his right hand in a gesture of blessing and beams descend diagonally down to Mary; within them is a rendering of a miniscule baby being sent down through the beams to Mary. She kneels before an altar with an open book, wearing an ornate gown with floral decorations that gathers in folds on the floor. Between her and the Archangel Gabriel on the left, there is a vase of lilies, the symbol of her purity and Immaculate Conception. Gabriel has wings and wears a clerical garment with saints depicted on the fringes. His hair is long, his face youthful and unbearded, and he holds up his right and hand and points the left at Mary. Mary Magdalene from the Exterior of the Triptych of the Annunciation, This exterior left panel of the Triptych of the Annunciation shows Saint Mary Magdalene. She sits in a field kneeling with her hands in a gesture of prayer or adoration. Her cloak is very long and gathers in folds, and her hair is very long and wavy down her back. She looks up and to the viewer's right. Behind her is a small city within a field, along with decorative flowers and non-figural designs in the sky. Polptych of Saint Vincent Ferrer, The panel shows several separate images within smaller frames surrounding the central image of the titular Saint Vincent Ferrer. The saint is dressed in monastic clothing and holds an open book, though the script is too small to be legible. Around him are scenes from his life. Beginning from the top left and moving down: a marriage he conducts, a sermon he gives to many, and him praying to a devotional panel of the Madonna and Child. From the top right: him blessing a family with a perished child, the saint meeting Christ, the saint appearing in the clouds over a night sky. The bottom panels have three scenes, though the far left is obscured in the photograph. The far left scene shows him either rebuking or healing a woman being held by a crowd and other uncouth-looking individuals close by, the middle is a woman reading a book towards what is probably a memorial statue, and on the far right it is him on his deathbed. Polyptych of Saint Vincent Ferrer, This shows the bottom left panel from the Polyptych of Saint Vincent of Ferrer. The saint is enclosed within what looks to be his study, due to the many scattered books on his shelves, open cabinets, and the Bible that is propped onto a podium opposite the kneeling saint. Polyptych of Saint Vincent Ferrer, This shows the bottom right scene from the predella of the Polyptych of Saint Vincent of Ferrer. The scene appears to show him in the midst of dying while on his deathbed. He is in the middle of the scene in a white garment with a long, black cloak over his head and back. A bishop reads out of a book and a monk beside him holds a swinging thurible. Monks frame either side of the small room, though none are shown behind the bed. Here there are two angels flying a nude male figure, presumably the saint's soul, up to an icon, presumably God the Father or a prophet. He looks directly down at them. In the crowd are numerous ladies at the front, all with white headcoverings. Polyptych of Saint Vincent Ferrer, This shows the middle scene from the predella of the Polyptych of Saint Vincent of Ferrer. A woman kneels in the middle wearing a contemporary fifteenth century headdress, and two children are behind her. Each seems to hold his or her own large book which he or she reads out of, perhaps the Bible or a prayer book. She prays before an altar or altar table with three small statues on it. The table is rendered to look as though it is within an apsidal niche. At the far left of the scene, a man standing halfway behind a curtain and watching the scene. Since the saint is not visible, this may be a posthumous panel showing the donor's wife praying to a statue of the saint which sits on the table. Saint Jerome and the Lion, The artist renders Saint Jerome removing a thorn from the paw of a lion. The two are presumably within Jerome's study, due to the shelves surrounding him filled with books and the open Bible at his podium, a signifier of his translating the Bible into "vulgar" or common language. Another visual attribution of the saint is his red had on the table behind the lion, this hat is often depicted on the saint and shows his church office. This site contains collection guides, or finding aids, to the archival collections held by Vanderbilt University Special Collections and University Archives, the History of Medicine Collection, and the Scarritt Bennett Center. Finding aids describe the context, arrangement, and structure of archival materials, allowing users to identify and request materials relevant to their research.
Requesting Materials
Each finding aid contains a link to request materials from the collections. Collections can also be requested by emailing the repository directly through the library website. Each repository has its own location, hours, and contact information. Please consult the repository with questions about using the materials. Collections are non-circulating and must be used in the repository’s reading room. In many cases, the collections are stored off-site and require advance notice for retrieval.
