Scope and Contents

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.SCUL.0424; Public Notes: The Orti San Michaelis or Orsanmichele was built in the 14th century to replace Florence's crumbling market infrastructure, the building was to house a market and a meeting place for the various guilds, who were each given a niche outside the building. Lorenzo Ghiberti produced the statue of Saint Matthew under the commission of the Money Changers and Lenders. Today, Saint Matthew is housed inside the church museum.
