Seen from behind, this cavalier’s downcast head and slumped posture imply the weight, and perhaps even the loneliness, of war. One of three known versions of this painting by the artist, it’s among the earliest subjects he explored—he made a related drawing at just eight years old.

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.DUTC.0630; Public Notes: From the National Gallery of London: The sitter has not been identified. Ter Borch specialised in small full-length portraits of Dutch burghers.
The portrait has been dated on the basis of style and costume to around 1663. It was probably painted as the pair to a 'Portrait of a Young Woman' (Cleveland, Museum of Art).

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.DUTC.0640; Public Notes: Former Goudstikker collection.; From the Rijksmuseum: In the 17th century this young woman in peasant clothing would have been instantly recognized as an unmarried country girl from her pinned-up plaits and red headband. Ter Borch’s model was probably Gesina, his half-sister. She posed regularly for him in various roles.

Vanderbilt photo identifier: SC.MSS.088.DUTC.0616; Public Notes: Auctioned by Sotheby on November 27th, 1963 and sold for £1,600.; Part of the French Royal Collection held in Chateau Saint-Hubert until the French Revolution. It then became part of the Martin Vidal collection in Chateau Haute Bruyere, and then became part of the Comte de Caude collection in Paris. It was exhibited in Munich in the Neue Pinakothek in 1930 as No. 314.
