Annunciation, The work presents a scene from the Gospel Book of Luke chapter 1 verses 26 through 38. The archangel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary to tell her of her immaculate conception of the Christ child. This scene is traditionally painted with lilies, the symbol of Mary’s purity; here, they are between the winged angel Gabriel on the left, and the Virgin Mary on the right. Mary wears a crown to allude to her future role as the queen of heaven. The interior is a contemporary fifteenth-century design, with geometric floors and arched doorways upheld by columns with gilded capitals. Through the interior doorway in the distance there is a landscape with a sun shining high in the sky; in this bright spot there is a faint outline of the figure of a man, either God the Father or Christ. The Calvary Scene, The scene seems partially divided between the three raised figures on crosses and the many on the ground below; it presents a scene from the Gospel Book of Matthew chapter 27 verses 32 through 55, the crucifixion of Christ. The central figure, Christ, is rendered still and almost enveloped in the large cloud behind him. At the foot of Christ's cross is a skull, signifying the name of the place, Golgotha, or "the place of the skull" (Matthew 27:33). Otherwise, the convulsing figures on the crosses flanking him and the chaotic scene below make it a full painting. The crucified criminal on Christ’s right looks to be bowing slightly, while the other turns his face away. Below, the soldiers who put Christ on the cross mock and jeer him. To the viewer’s far right, under the criminal’s cross, the soldiers toss lots for Christ’s clothes. To the viewer’s far left, Mary the Mother of Christ faints in agony and is supported by the other women. The artist has rendered the scene within an arid valley. The Nativity, The scene is from the Gospel Book of Matthew chapter 2, when foreign kings called the Magi come to visit the newly born Christ child. In the center of the painting is Mary, the Mother of Christ holding the babe on her lap. Jesus’s earthly father, Saint Joseph, adores the baby from a relaxed pose, positioned behind the left shoulder of Mary. Three kings are shown surrounding the holy family; one kneels at Mary’s right knee, where the clothed, haloed child stands to receive the gift; the other stands behind this king holding his gift; and the third is over on Joseph’s left side holding up his gift with his right hand. Flanking this central group on either side are two horses and one page boy that cares for the horses. None of the figures look at the audience, most are focused on the central activity of Christ receiving the first gift. Directly behind the scene in the middle is an architectural framework that represents the stable that the baby was born in. In the distance is an arid-looking landscape.
