Allen Tate and Mark Van Doren Correspondence

Scope and Content Note

This small collection (.21linear feet) includes personal correspondence between Allen Tate and Mark Van Doren and his wife Mrs. Dorothy Van Doren and other correspondence that concerns Mark Van Doren. There are also poems by Tate, Christmas cards, photographs, and various other items that relate to their friendship over many years. Other correspondence can be found in Mark Van Doren’s papers at Columbia University.

Abstract The papers of Peter Taylor (1917-1994) were collected by bibliographer Stuart Wright and purchased by Vanderbilt University in 1988. A native of Tennessee and a former Vanderbilt student, Taylor is acknowledged as a master of the short story form and won several major literary awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his 1986 novel A Summons To Memphis. This collection contains the papers of Elizabeth Chapman Denny Vann (1884 Jan. 7 - 1977 March 20). Elizabeth Vann was a Vanderbilt graduate (B.A. 1904, M.A. 1905) and New Jersey State Director of the Women's and Professional Division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s, among many other jobs. She was also involved in a number of civic organizations, including the Leonia Women's Club, the Civic Conference, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
