James Lockhart Scudder Letter

Abstract This collection contains a letter dated Oct. 1862 from James Lockhart Scudder to Confederate Colonel Henry B. Davidson, his brother-in-law. In the letter, Scudder assures Davidson of the falsity of the rumor "that [he] had turned Union man."From the vendor: “…[A]ll the family were very anxious about your safety as you were exchanged before the great battles which have been fought lately."I know well Davidson that you were much grieved to hear as you say in your letter...

John Seigenthaler Papers

This collection contains the papers of John Seigenthaler, journalist, writer, and longtime editor of The Tennessean. Seigenthaler was a prominent advocate for First Amendment rights and founded the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University. Seigenthaler also worked for Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and was a longtime friend of the Kennedy family.

Scope and Contents This .21 linear feet collection contains 60 individual travel postcards and four souvenir booklets, in 27 file folders. Some of the postcards were mailed and others are blank. The majority of the mailed cards were addressed to Mary, Anna, or George Sekerak in Cleveland, Ohio. The cards are arranged alphabetically by state, then by location within the state. Personal papers of pathologist, Vanderbilt alum and Vanderbilt professor John L. Shapiro. The collection consists of notebooks containing material (case histories) from Clinico-Pathology conferences (CPC) at VUMC, some with Shapiro's handwritten notes. The CPCs were one of Dr. Shapiro's major instructional techniques. The cases usually precede the conference dates by three to fifteen years. These dates are for the conferences.
