This collection contains two maps of Colombia comprised of five and three fragments that were created by Francisco José de Caldas in circa 1802-1807. One map depicts part of Antioquia in three fragments. The other map depicts the Cauca Valley in Colombia in five fragments. Also included in the collection are field notes related to the maps created by Caldas.

Maya Medical Manuscripts

This manuscript contains two manuscripts in one, which consists of a book of medical remedies, with illnesses cross-referenced to plants and various curing recipes. In Maya and Spanish, the two constitute respectively, the original Recetario de los Indios, and the Cuaderno de Teabo. This volume offers insights into the ailments that plagued inhabitants of Mexico in the nineteenth century.

Abstract

A handwritten and highly detailed register of semi-emancipated slaves under the Cuban concept of the patronato, meaning, an intermediate status between slave and free. This register gives the names of over 1400 people who were provisionally released from slavery after Cuba began its gradual emancipation. Each listing provides the owner's name, the former slave's name and age, and details about them.

Slaves of the Brazilian Royal Family Manuscript

Abstract

An account of births and deaths at Santa Cruz, an enormous royal plantation on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The table has a section for slaves (born, died, ran off, recovered) and for various types of livestock (cattle, sheep, horses, pigs). At the foot are noted the number of slaves, civilians, and soldiers who were in the plantation's hospital.

This collection contains a drinking cup fashioned from a coconut shell with the inscription "Chancos" and "J.T." This item was apparently given to Julián Trujillo Largacha to commemorate victory in the Battle of Los Chancos in 1876. Julián Trujillo Largacha was the 12th President of the United States of Colombia.
