John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie Collection

Abstract

This collection contains manuscripts, photographs, scrapbooks, and realia related to Jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dizzy Gillespie. The photographs series in particular is extensive, documenting Gillespie's entire life and career. This collection was purchased through the NMAAM-Vanderbilt University Collections Initiative.

Gowthorpe, Montague Collection

Scope and Contents The Montague F. Gowthorpe Opera Collection was created a period of years by Montague F. Gowthorpe chairman of the Detroit Symphony and one of the original vice-presidents at Paramount Pictures. Gowthorpe was born in Kings Lyn, England in 1898 and was a lifetime devotee of opera which he regarded as the highest form of art and entertainment. After his death in 1980 this collection was passed to his niece, Bonnie Lamar, MD of Tennessee. She donated it to Special Collections in 1998....

Grand Ole Opry Collection

Abstract

This collection, donated in 1967 by Jesse Wills, is composed of a wide variety of items of historical and musical interest, including songbooks, correspondence, photographs, and other unique items. As president of National Life and Accident Insurance Company, the parent company of WSM, Inc. and the Grand Ole Opry, Wills had access to a wide variety of material associated with country music in general and the Grand Ole Opry in particular.

Sara Holroyd World War II and George Peabody College for Teachers Collection

This small collection (.42 linear feet ) contains letters, programs, and newspaper clippings collected by Sara Holroyd, a 1946 graduate of George Peabody College for Teachers. (Peabody merged Vanderbilt University in 1979.). Ms. Holroyd was a student leader and a musician while at Peabody, and many of the programs feature her as a student musician. This collection also chronicles the end of WWII and activities at Peabody College during that time.

This small collection consists of materials related to the Vanderbilt University Student Research project of Blair School of Music student John Dick, Jr., gathered in May-June 2004 in Uganda. This work focused on the intersection of HIV/AIDS, traditional musical culture, and activism, and resulted in a thesis. A working short-score manuscript for Sinfonisches Vorspiel for the entire work notated in pencil on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper, containing numerous corrections, amendations, directions, indications pertaining to scoring, and furnished with lists of numbers (in cm) indicating the space to be allowed for the width of each bar in the successive fair-copy autograph.
