The collection organizes the communications, reports, newspapers articles, photographs, financial data, college coursework, staff and human resources information, promotional literature, and ephemera into folders for each president.

Biographical / Historical

Scarritt College opened in 1892 in Kansas City, MO., as a Methodist training school for women to become missionaries and deaconesses. Eugene Hendrix was the first president and Belle Bennent the first vice president. Dr. and Mrs. Nathan Scarritt provided significant financial resources. In 1924, the college moved to Nashville during Jesse Lee Cunninggim’s presidency. Hugh C. Stuntz, the first president included in the collection, became president in 1943. Scarritt college closed in 1988.

Abstract

This collection contains historical information regarding eight presidents of Scarritt from 1918 to to its closing in 1988. The presidents covered in this collection are Edmund Cook (1918-19210, J.L. Cunninngim (1921-1943), Hugh C. Stuntz (1943-1956), Foye Gibson ((1957-1959), D.D. Holt (1960-1970), Gerald Anderson (1970-1973), Richard Palmer (1973-1977), and Donald Welch (1980-1988). It does not cover Presidents Eugene Hendrix (1892), Edmund Cook (1918-1921), Jesse Lee Cunninggim (1921-1943), It does not include information about Maria Layng Gibson (1892-1918, Douglas Reid Sasser ((1978-1979), nor Interim President Sam Buchanan (1977-1978).

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically starting with President Edmund Cook and finishing with President Donald Welch. The individual folders for each president are arranged by subject. The folders have been stored in Hollinger boxes.
