Scope and Contents
This collection of 23 hollinger boxes contains materials from Brown's time in the Epworth League (1920s-1930s), her studies at Southern Methodist University (1919-1921) and The University of Chicago (1934-1942), her professorship at Scarritt College (1942-1966), her authorship of several books, and her time at McKendree Manor Retirement Home (1974-1984).

General
Much of Brown's work focused on the African-American experience and race relations. In 1936, she published her first book, Story of the American Negro. From 1939 to 1941, Brown worked for the federal government’s National Survey of Higher Education for Negroes, providing curriculum development assistance for African-American colleges throughout the United States. She published Race Relations in a Democracy in 1949 and Understanding Race Relations in 1973. These boxes contain notes and research for these works, as well as for her 1963 book Understanding Other Cultures.
