Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Kate Eastman Savage Zerfoss, noted Nashville ophthalmologist, was a longtime member of the clinical faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She was born October 1, 1895 daughter of Dr. Giles C. Savage, and Leslie A. Jones. She received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in 1918 and her M. D from Tulane University in 1922. She began her longtime association with the School of Medicine in 1930 as Assistant in Clinical Ophthalmology. In 1933, she became a member of the clinical faculty as an assistant professor, and was elevated to the rank of associate professor in 1944. In addition to a private medical practice which she maintained for over 52 years, she was acting chief visiting surgeon of the department of ophthalmology during World War II and, along with her husband Dr. Tom Zerfoss, was co founder and co-director of the Student Health Service. She died in Nashville April 11, 1988.
