Historical or Biographical Note

John B. Youmans (1893-1979) was a physician, teacher, researcher, and author. He received his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1916 and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1919. He then had an Internship at the Milwaukee Children's Hospital in 1920. In 1921 Dr. Youmans was the Medical House Officer at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then was Assistant in Medicine at Johns Hopkins in 1922. At the University of Michigan Dr. Youmans went from Instructor to Assistant Professor of Medicine during the time period from 1922-1927. He then came to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; he was first an Assistant Professor and later a Professor of Medicine, from 1927-1944. During World War II he was a Colonel and Head of the Armed Forces Nutrition Services of the Office of the Surgeon General from 1942-1948. He then served as Dean and Professor of Medicine at the University of the Illinois College of Medicine from 1946-1950. He returned to Vanderbilt as Dean, Professor of Medicine, and Director of Medical Affairs from 1950-1958. Then he served as the Technical Director of Research for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command from 1958-1960.
