Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. William (Billy) Henry Witt, physician, teacher and writer was a member of the Vanderbilt faculty and clinical faculty. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1917-1919 where, as a Major, he joined the Vanderbilt Hospital Unit "S" in Nevers, France. Dr. Witt was born January 10, 1866 in Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee. A graduate of the Webb School, Dr. Witt attended Vanderbilt where he received his B.A. in 1887 and M.A. in 1888. After teaching for a time at the McTyeire Institute, he returned to Vanderbilt and earned his M.D in 1894 and was the Founders Medalist of his class. He did post graduate training as an intern at the Poly Clinic in New York City in 1895, and returned to Nashville to practice medicine and continue his long time association with Vanderbilt. He first served as demonstrator and later a lecturer of anatomy beginning in 1895. In 1899, he joined the faculty as Professor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics. Beginning in 1906, he also served as Associate Professor of Medicine, until 1911 when he was elevated to Professor of Medicine and Clinical Medicine. He held this post until the reorganization of the school of medicine in 1925, when he assumed the appointment of Professor of Clinical Medicine. As a member of the clinical faculty, he played a key role in the instruction and development of medical students and postgraduates. Retiring as an active member of the clinical faculty in 1938, he was accorded emeritus status in 1942. He died in Nashville on September 1, 1954.
