Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Arthur J. Sutherland, former president of staff at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, was born in Nashville in 1910. He received his bachelors degree from Vanderbilt, and received his medical degree from Vanderbilt in 1934. His postgraduate training was conducted at Ohio State University, and St. Thomas Hospital. Soon afterward, he entered private practice, but also served as district surgeon for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, as well as surgeon for the Nashville Gas Company. During World War II he served in the Army Medical Corps, attaining the rank of colonel before retiring from the service in 1945. He died August 1, 1995.
