Historical or Biographical Note
William Henry Sebrell Jr.'s involvement with nutrition sent him throughout the world, from Europe to the South Pole, and he was a pioneer and leader in research on the B vitamins. His discovery and description of riboflavin deficiency in human beings was published in 1938.
His achievements in public health nutrition, and the betterment of people, were due to his scientific eminence, energy, medical training, and executive skills. Sebrell's titles were Assistant Surgeon General; U.S. Public Health Service/Director, National Institutes of Health (1950-1955); R.R. Williams Professor Emeritus of Nutrition, Columbia University; and Executive Director, Weight Watchers Foundation.
Sebrell was treasurer of AIN, 1940-1944; president, 1995; and was elected as a Fellow in 1968. He was president of ASCN in 1963.
