Abstract

Biographical file includes photographs of Dr. Savage and family,correspondence, obituary, excerpts from Southern Medical Association's 50 year anniversary publication, author's copy of Opthalmic Neuo-Myology with hand written corrections and additions, 8 printing plates for illustrations contained in Opthalmic Neuro-Myology, copy of "Jefferson Medical College Souvenir of the Class of 1878" published in 1898 and containing a biographical entry of Dr. Savage.

Historical or Biographical Note

G.C. Savage, M.D., was an internationally known authority on diseases of the eye. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1878. He took on postgraduate work in London and Vienna for two years in surgery before returning to America to practice in Jackson, Tennessee. During his time his Jackson, he studied ophthalmology.

Savage came to Nashville in 1886 to accept the professorship of ophthalmology at Vanderbilt Medical School. He held this position until 1911, when he retired from the faculty to devote time to his practice and to writing.

Savage authored several textbooks on ophthalmology and served on many medical association boards, including the Southern Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the Tennessee State Medical Asociation. A devout Baptist, Savage also authored many religious publications. He passed away in 1930.
