Historical or Biographical Note
Simon J. Pilkis, M.D., Ph.D., was an internationally recognized authority on the regulation of hepatic glucose metabolism and on the role glucokinase plays in mediating glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by the pancreatic b-cells. A graduate of the University of Chicago Medical School, Pilkis was a member of the Vanderbilt medical faculty from 1972-1986. He served as professor of physiology.
