Historical or Biographical Note
M. Ann Melly received her B.A. in zoology from Wellesley College in 1949 and her doctorate in microbiology from Vanderbilt University in 1969. She returned to Vanderbilt in 1959 as a research associate in the Division of Infectious Diseases. Melly made Vanderbilt her home, progressing through the ranks until she became director of the George Hunter Laboratory of Infectious Diseases in 1982. At the time of her death in 1986, Melly was associate professor of medicine and assistant professor of microbiology at Vanderbilt.
