Historical or Biographical Note
William Litterer Jr., M.D., was born in 1879 in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended the University of Nashville from 1896-1900, taking special courses in the arts and sciences. Litterer then received his M.D. from the Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1901 and his A.M. degree from the University of Michigan in 1902. In 1902, he graduated with a Ph.G. degree from the Vanderbilt School of Pharmacy, and the following year, he received the Pharmaceutical Chemists degree.
Litterer eventually became a Professor of Bacteriology at Vanderbilt and an Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Vanderbilt (1928 to 1935). He also served as State Bacteriologist and Director of the Division of Laboratories of the Department of Public Health of Tennessee for many years. In addition, Litterer conducted special government research in lethal gas during World War I. He passed away in 1945.
