Historical or Biographical Note

A native of Hodonin, Czechoslovakia, Lubomir S. Hnilica obtained his Ph.D. from Masanyk University and his Candidate Scienciarum from the Czechoslovakia Academy of Sciences in Prague. Subsequently, he worked in the National Cancer Institute in Bratislava. In 1960 Hnilica moved to London to be associated with the Chester Beatty Cancer Research Institute.

A year after he immigrated into the United States, Hnilica worked first at the Baylor University College of Medicine and then became a member of the faculty of the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston, Texas. Hnilica joined the faculty of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1975 as Professor of Biochemistry and Pathology. He was occupant of the Mary Geddes Stahlman Chair for Cancer Research and director of the A.B. Hancock Jr. Memorial Cancer Research Laboratory. Hnilica devoted his whole professional career to the biochemistry of chromosomal proteins and made many basic pioneering observations.
